1. It's all about the right serve

Service is the only stroke in table tennis that is not influenced by the opponent. You can perfect it with diligence and thus achieve an incredible amount, especially at the lower and middle level. By refining the cut, serving more aggressively, forcing direct return errors, or by having the opponent return the ball extremely high.

A perfect serve can go anywhere in terms of placement, but goes relatively flat and quickly over the net. I would recommend separate service training to every amateur player in order to bring more risk to the service. So that you are able to serve well and aggressively even when the scores are tight. The best thing to do is to put a box with many balls next to the plate and then just train serves.

2. Analyze weaknesses and train them specifically

Many hobby players go into the hall and play matches directly. But if you want to work on yourself, you have to know what is missing and then train that with targeted system exercises. When I give coaching lessons, I block the balls where there are weaknesses. For example, if a player has a problem with the right feel for the ball, I play a control exercise with him: I play the client a ball in backhand, a ball in the middle, a ball in backhand, a ball in low forehand. So I'm playing exactly where I want it to go to improve my client. This gives you security in your strokes and also feels safer in the game, especially with tight scores.

3. Minimize the risk

Hobby players too often play too risky. As a non-professional, however, you are not so sure about the strokes and that can quickly backfire. I would advise amateur players to just minimize the risk a bit and maybe get the ball over the table one or two times more. Then you make the point.

4. The power lies in the rotation

If someone just hits the ball head-on, all you have to do is hold out the club and the ball usually just flies back onto the table. But if you put rotation into the ball, the opponent has to change the angle of his club to compensate for the rotation. The next time he hits, he may have to do it again and be forced to react defensively. For a rotation you mustn't hit the ball head-on, you have to touch or stroke it rather than hit it.

5. The deeper, the more flexible

If you look at the professionals you can see that they are in a very low leg position in order to be flexible on their feet and faster on the balls. In order to be able to hold the ball for ball over the entire rally, you have to build up enormous leg muscles. Even if amateur players do not do extra strength training, they can improve their condition, for example by going jogging or doing interval runs. If you are really serious, you can build up your shoulders, neck and chest area to develop even more power in the game.

6. Away from the table

Hobby players are often too close to the table. But if I move only half a step away from the table, the balls won't come at me as quickly. And I have a little more time to think about where I want to play, whether I want to play a fast ball or one with rotation. A suitable distance is a good arm length, although this can vary a bit depending on your height.

7. The right concentration

Especially when players are afraid of losing, they always remember that they have to make the point now or must not lose under any circumstances. This makes them even more nervous. A good help to overcome nervousness is the following: I note how the opponent reacts when I play the ball there or there and think about where he will play the next ball. By trying to anticipate your next steps, you stop thinking about winning or losing and are concerned with the important thing - what's really going on in the game.
